LCS Materials for Ultra Low Residual Chlorine Analysis-Consistent, Stable and Easy to Use

SM1020B Sec. 3 of Standard Methods requires daily analysis of external standards along with your normal sample load. If you are doing ultra low residual chlorine analysis(<200ug/L), the daily LCS can be problematic because the analyte source material can be quite unstable when diluted to typical analytical levels. Further, unless packaged hermetically, stock standard solutions tend to degrade pretty rapidly requiring you to then re-standardize or re-purchase the materials more often than you might want.

To address the difficulty in handling standard solutions for ultra low residual chlorine, we have developed single use LCS standards that are packaged in a manner preventing analyte source volatilization while not requiring any pipets to prepare. This new standard, Ultra Low Residual Chlorine Accuracy Check Solution yields an LCS of 100ug/L and is supplied with a certificate of traceability listing true value and acceptance limits.

These new standards are packaged under argon at exactly 1.50mL in 2mL "snap and pour" ampules in packages of 24 ampules. To use the standard, add a small amount of reagent water to a 50mL volumetric flask. Then, take a standard ampule from the refrigerator and quantitatively transfer the contents of the ampule into the flask with 2-3 small rinsings. Because these ampules are the wide neck type, the standard solution should pour easily but a transfer pipet may be used. Once the quantitative transfer is complete, bring the solution to 50mL with reagent water and proceed directly to analysis.

Keeping it Simple - The Universal Wastewater Standard

Section 1020 B3 of Standard Methods states that an independent LCS must be run on a daily basis. If your lab has to run multiple parameters, managing multiple LCS solutions can be burdensome and costly. In an effort to simplify this compliance to Sec. 1020 B3, we have developed our Universal Wastewater Standard.

A truly unique product developed and manufactured exclusively by NSI Solutions, the Universal Wastewater Standard can be used to QC analyses for 12 conventional pollutants. It can even be used for daily GGA tests.

The Universal Wastewater Standard is certified for the following analytes:

   TOC - 121 mg/L     BOD5 - 198 mg/L             CBOD - 163 mg/L        COD - 292 mg/L     TSS - 100 mg/L          Conductivity - 600 umhos

   pH - 7.20 units      Total Solids - 725 mg/L   p-PO4 - 2.50 mg/L     TDS - 450 mg/L       N-NH3 - 7.50 mg/L      N-NO3 - 3.00 mg/L

* Concentrations may vary nominally due to manufacturing variances.

The demand parameters are derived from 50/50 glucose/glutamic acid at 300 mg/L. Therefore, the standard can be used additionally for the daily GGA by simply diluting 6mL to 300mL directly into your BOD bottles.

A Stable Sulfide Standard: And No Precipitate, Too?

The typical sulfide standard is available from many commmercial sources is preserved in an aqueous, alkaline matrix with a small amount of Zinc Acetate. This conventional approach to preparing sulfide standards produces a solution that is stable for a short time only, and generates a precipitate that requires resuspension each time used.

We have developed a new, very stable sulfide standard. The standard is formulated at 10 mg/mL available sulfide in a proprietary buffer matrix in an oxygen free environment. This formulation requires no Zinc Acetate preservation so no precipitate is formed! Without a precipitate, aliquots can be taken without concern for solution heterogeniety. When stored at 4 degrees Celsius, we are estimating this solution is stable for at least 12 months from manufacturing.

To use this standard, mix gently by inversion then perform an appropriate serial dilution to yield the required standard concentrations. The stock standard is supplied at 10 mg/mL to allow for easy dilution up to 100 mg/L as per SM 4500-S2. This can be used for calibration or as an LCS.

Fecal Coliform/E. Coli Positive Control Standard - 100 CFU

Dissolves Fast, Recovers Well and Does Not Require ATCC License Agreement

Our new, E. Coli Positive Control Sample can be used for a number of purposes:

Supplied at 100 CFU per sample with a COA, this E. Coli sample can be used to validate quantitative analysis. Can be used to develop control charts.

Is ideal for use as training tools or to document an analysts competency.

Useful for media validation.

These samples are different than the conventional lyophilized samples. Because they are prepared and stabilized by a proprietary gel lyophilization technology, they dissolve faster and more completely and recover better than the conventional charcoal base lyophilized samples.

Like all of our new wastewater standards, these E. Coli positive controls are really easy-to-use. All you need to do is bring 100 mL of sterile dilution water up to 37oC. Then, aseptically transfer at room temperature the sample to the 37oC sterile water. Allow this to dissolve for 15 minutes or so. The pellet will completely dissolve with no insoluble residue. Mix by inversion and you are ready to roll. The E. Coli is ATCC# 11775 equivalent.

The Easier the Better - Whole Volume Solids Standards

Using standards that comply with SM1020B, Section 3 really ought to be made easy, especially for analyses run every day. That has been the goal of our product development effort over the past year. We have some cool stuff in the pipeline and a number new easy-to-use standards and LCS products ready to ship.

One group of products is the Low, Mid and High Level standards. All are supplied as ready-to-use, 4 x 1000mL cases.

The Mid and High level solids standards (QCI-055 and QCI-055H respectively) are formulated to contain TDS, TSS and total solids. They are stable at room temperature, non-hazardous and really easy-to-use. All you have to do is shake the bottle well, and measure an appropriate sized aliquot. That is all there is to it - no pipeting, no dilutions and no formulating.

The Low Level TSS standard is formulated at 15-30mg/L. It is as easy-to-use as the Mid and High Level Standards and, because it is formulated at a low range, a high volume of the solution should be used per analysis. It is specifically formulated for MDL validations.

Part# QCI-055 Mid Level Solids Standard - $120.00 Per Case - TSS: 60-100 mg/L, TDS: 500-1500 mg/L, TS: 500-1600 mg/L

Part# QCI-055H High Level Solids Standard - $120.00 Per Case - TSS: 400-500 mg/L, TDS: 1000-3000 mg/L, TS: 1400-3500 mg/L

Part# QCI-057 Low Level TSS Standard - $100.00 Per Case - TSS: 15-30 mg/L

These stock products are value priced. We have developed a work cell approach to this product platform, and can even formulate these as custom standards economically, and in most cases only a small percent surcharge over the stock prices.

Check back soon at "The Standard Nation" to see a video demonstration of these products.

LCS Materials for Residual Chlorine - Consistent and Easy-To-Use

SM1020B Sec. 3 of Standard Methods requires daily analysis of external standards along with your normal sample load. If you are doing residual chlorine analysis the daily LCS can be problematic because the analyte source material is quite unstable when diluted to typical analytical levels. And, unless packaged hermetically, stock standard solutions tend to degrade pretty rapidly requiring you to then re-standardize or re-purchase the materials more often than you might want.

To address the difficulty in handling standard solutions for residual chlorine, we worked to develop single use LCS standards that are packaged in a manner preventing volatilization while not requiring any pipets to prepare. The results are our new Total Chlorine Accuracy Check Solutions supplied at 1.00mg/L and 2.50mg/L. Each standard is supplied with a certificate of traceability listing concentration and acceptance limits.

Part# QCI-117 - 2.50mg/L Chlorine - 24 ampules for $35.00

Part# QCI-123 - 1.00mg/L Chlorine - 24 ampules for $35.00

These standards are packaged under Argon at exactly 1.50mL in 2mL amber "snap and pour" ampules in packages of 24 ampules. To use the standard add a small amount of chlorine free water to a 25mL volumetric flask or a 25mL sample cuvette. Then, take a standard ampule from the refrigerator and quantitatively transfer the contents of the ampule to the flask or cuvette with a couple of small rinsings. Because these ampules are the wide neck type, the standard should pour easily without the use of a transfer pipet. Once you complete the quantitative transfer, bring the solution up to 25mL and proceed directly to analysis.

Doing the GGA Test Should be Easy - Here Is Help.

SM5210B Sec. 6 details GGA requirements. While plus or minus 30.5mg/L windows might appear pretty generous, GGA degradation to non-conforming levels can happen pretty quickly once it starts and then you are stuck rejecting data and trouble shooting your analytical system. By eliminating the GGA solution itself as a potential problem, you will eliminate at least 1/3 of your system from trouble shooting in the event of a non-conforming GGA and probably more than 50% of your non-conformances.

This can be done using controlled manufacturing processes to deliver a guaranteed stable GGA in error-proof packaging.

The typical GGA solution can be made in your lab or purchased as a bulk solution from various suppliers. Both methods have some problems. Making it yourself requires drying, weighing and dilution of the neat materials and each step adds error. While commercial bulk solutions eliminate these steps, neither method (making it yourself or buying in bulk) addresses the degradation that occurs due to bacterial contamination-the leading cause of GGA degradation. Each time you open a bottle of 300mg/L GGA, some bacterial contamination can occur and bugs really like GGA.
